In short: the small red bumps that appear after shaving or hair removal, on your legs or bikini area, are usually irritated hair follicles or hairs that don't make it to the surface. At home, you can change your routine: a clean blade, shaving in the direction of hair growth, gentle exfoliation a day or two before, never on inflamed skin, and moisturizing afterwards. If the bumps hurt, fill with pus, spread or don't go away within one to two weeks, see a dermatologist.

What folliculitis is

Folliculitis is inflammation of the follicle, the tiny "channel" the hair grows from. It looks like red bumps, sometimes with a white tip, that can itch or sting. It often shows up where skin is shaved, waxed or rubs against clothes: on the legs, bikini area, buttocks and underarms.

It often comes together with ingrown hairs. A hair that's broken or cut very short curls back into the skin, and the follicle gets irritated. That's why the same routine changes help with both.

When to see a doctor

Folliculitis can have other causes too, and some need prescribed treatment. See a dermatologist if:

  • the bumps are painful, large or fill with pus;
  • the area is spreading or you have a fever;
  • it doesn't go away within one to two weeks or keeps coming back;
  • it appears on your scalp or face;
  • you already have a skin condition or are following a treatment.

Everything below is a care routine for everyday skin, not a treatment.

What you can do at home

When you shave

  1. Soften your skin first. Shave at the end of your shower, after a few minutes of warm water.
  2. Use a clean, sharp blade. A dull blade pulls the hair instead of cutting it.
  3. Shave in the direction your hair grows, especially in the bikini area. Against the grain you cut shorter, but the hair curls back into the skin more easily.
  4. Don't stretch your skin and don't go over the same spot many times.
  5. Rinse the blade often and let it dry between uses.

A single-blade razor cuts the hair at skin level, not below it, which is why many people prefer it for sensitive areas. It's the razor in The Shave Ritual.

After shaving

  • Wear loose clothes that don't rub the area, especially after shaving your bikini line.
  • Moisturize your skin with a simple product, without strong fragrance. A few drops of argan oil on damp skin are enough.
  • Don't squeeze or scratch the bumps.
  • Change your towel often and use only your own.

Exfoliation: when yes and when no

Regular exfoliation removes the layer of dead skin that can keep hair trapped under the skin. But timing matters:

  • Yes: a day or two before shaving or hair removal, on non-irritated skin, once a week.
  • No: on the same day as shaving, on inflamed bumps, on areas with cuts or on skin that stings.
  • In the bikini area: only with very light pressure, on the surrounding skin, never on mucous membranes.

With the kessa glove, your skin first needs 10–15 minutes in warm water. On dry skin, the glove only irritates. The exact steps are in our kessa glove guide.

What our customers say

Many of our customers have written to us about rough skin and hairs after hair removal:

"My skin no longer looks rough, it's so much smoother!"
Alina B. · Exfoliating glove
"You can see the results from the first use. Velvety skin and far fewer ingrown hairs."
Anamaria E. · Exfoliating glove
"I've created a weekly ritual, and my skin looks really healthy, with no irritation and no ingrown hairs."
Elena C. · Exfoliating glove

A tip from Claudia F., who uses The Hammam Ritual: "The secret is to stay in a warm bath as long as you can (20–30 minutes)."

Exfoliation can make your skin look and feel smoother, but it doesn't replace a consultation. If the bumps keep coming back, ask a dermatologist what's causing them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I exfoliate if I have folliculitis?

Not on inflamed areas. Exfoliate only non-irritated skin, a day or two before shaving, once a week. If the bumps hurt or fill with pus, see a doctor.

Why do I get red bumps after shaving my bikini area?

The skin there is thin, the hair is dense and slightly curly, and clothes rub the area. Hairs cut very short can curl back into the skin and irritate the follicle.

Is it better to shave in the direction of hair growth?

Yes, especially on sensitive areas. Shaving against the grain cuts shorter, but increases the chance of the hair growing under the skin.

How often should I exfoliate if I often get bumps after hair removal?

Once a week, a day or two before shaving or hair removal. More often can irritate your skin even more.

When should I see a dermatologist?

If the bumps are painful, fill with pus, spread, you have a fever or they don't go away within one to two weeks. And if they keep coming back, to find out the cause.
