In short: for body exfoliation at home you have three options: an exfoliating glove, a scrub or a dry brush. A glove used on skin softened by steam removes dead skin most visibly. Exfoliate once a week, on damp skin, and moisturize at the end.

Why exfoliate your body

Your skin constantly renews its surface layer. Dead skin cells build up, especially on elbows, knees, heels and back. Exfoliation removes them, and your skin looks smoother and takes in moisture better afterwards.

Glove, scrub or brush: a comparison

Exfoliating glove Scrub Dry brush
On what skin Damp, softened Damp Dry
How visible Very, the skin comes off in rolls A little A little
Leaves oil on the skin No Yes, usually No
How long it lasts For months Until it runs out Years
Best for Deep, weekly exfoliation Quick smoothing Massage, before showering

In short: if you want to see the dead skin come off, the glove is the most effective option. A scrub is gentler, but usually leaves a film of oil. A dry brush is more of a massage.

How to exfoliate your body at home, step by step

  1. Heat, 10–15 minutes. A shower as hot as you like, or a bath. No shower gel.
  2. Beldi black soap. A little on damp skin, massaged gently, then rinsed off completely. See how to use Moroccan black soap.
  3. Exfoliate with the glove. Step out of the water and rub firmly, from top to bottom, one area at a time. Details in our kessa glove guide.
  4. Rinse. Lukewarm water all over your body.
  5. Moisturize. A few drops of argan oil on still-damp skin.

How often to exfoliate

Once a week is enough for most people. If your skin is dry or sensitive, you can go to once every 10–14 days and press more lightly. If your skin turns very red, stings or flakes, take a break until it calms down.

When not to exfoliate

  • On irritated, broken or sunburned skin.
  • Right before hair removal. Exfoliate a few days after.
  • On the same day as acid or retinol products on the same area.

Frequently asked questions

What's better for body exfoliation: the glove or a scrub?

For visible exfoliation, the glove used on softened skin. A scrub is gentler, but usually leaves oil on your skin and removes less dead skin.

Does exfoliation help with ingrown hairs?

Yes, regular exfoliation helps prevent them, because it removes the layer of dead skin that hairs get trapped under. Exfoliate a few days after hair removal, not right before.

Can I exfoliate my body in the shower, without a bathtub?

Yes. Stay under a shower as hot as you like for 10–15 minutes, with the bathroom door closed, so steam builds up.

How long does a body exfoliation at home take?

About 30 minutes, including steam, soap and oil at the end.
